Villa Sehmer

The merchant and industrialist Theodor Sehmer, founder of a machine factory and the Saarbrücken foundry works, had the building constructed; this took place between 1880 and 1882. It is suspected that the Saarbrücken architect Gustav Schmoll designed it. In 1889, a coach house was built according to plans by Schmoll. In 1893/1894, the architect Karl Brugger was commissioned to design a garden pavilion. In July 1913, the entrance area had to be modified because the Mainz Street was significantly expanded. Two years later, the garden house and greenhouse were partially demolished. In 1919, the villa was sold to the director of the French mining administration for a sum of 250,000 marks. In 1920, the villa used as a service apartment was remodeled. In 1935, the winter garden, constructed in a wooden structure, was replaced by a solid building. In 1949, the house received a wine cellar.
