Bird Protection Station Neschwitz

The Neschwitz Bird Protection Station is a bird station under the auspices of the State Company for Environment and Agriculture in the municipality of Neschwitz in the Bautzen district of Saxony. Its seat is the former "Herrenpavillon" in the castle park of the Baroque palace Neschwitz.
The Saxon Homeland Protection Association founded a bird protection station in the New Castle in Neschwitz in 1930. The management was taken over by the forest ranger and ornithologist Arnold Baron von Vietinghoff-Riesch. As the owner of the castle and the associated park as well as surrounding lands, he had favorable conditions for implementing practical bird protection measures. Together with other bird protection stations, the Neschwitz Bird Protection Station was designated a State Bird Protection Station in 1936. The New Castle was destroyed down to its foundation walls by arson at the end of World War II on May 20, 1945. In the process, valuable documents of the bird protection station were destroyed and the facility was looted. Vietinghoff-Riesch and his family left Neschwitz as they were expropriated during the land reform. From 1946, a bird protection station in Moritzburg temporarily took over bird protection in Saxony.
