Stolpen Castle

Stolpen Castle, which was transformed from a high castle to a palace during its history and later used as a fortress, is located about 27 kilometers east of Dresden, just south of the historic city center of Stolpen in the district of Saxon Switzerland-East Ore Mountains. The most prominent resident of Stolpen Castle was Countess Cosel; also, two Bishops of Meissen died at the castle, who temporarily made it their residence.

The basalt mountain Stolpen was located at the border of the Margraviate of Meissen to the Sorbian-inhabited areas east of the Elbe and simultaneously at the intersection of important long-distance trade routes. Taking advantage of the favorable strategic location, reports of the fortification of the elevation are already known from around 1100.
