Il castello di Stolpen, che nella sua storia fu trasformato da fortezza in palazzo e successivamente utilizzato come forte, si trova a circa 27 chilometri a est di Dresda, immediatamente a sud del centro storico di Stolpen, nella regione della Svizzera sassone-Osterzgebirge. La residente più famosa del castello di Stolpen fu la contessa Cosel; al castello morirono inoltre due vescovi di Meißen, che in un certo periodo fecero del castello la loro sede di governo.

Il monte di basalto Stolpen si trovava al confine del markgravio di Meißen con le zone abitate dai sorabi a est dell'Elba e contemporaneamente all'incrocio di importanti vie di commercio a lunga distanza. Sfruttando la favorevole posizione strategica, già intorno al 1100 si hanno notizie incerte sulla fortificazione della collina.
