In the 10th century, the lordship of Burkheim, based at Burkheim Castle in Burkheim am Kaiserstuhl, today a district of Vogtsburg in the Kaiserstuhl in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, passed to Einsiedeln Abbey.
In 1560, Lazarus von Schwendi received the pledge of the castle, town and lordship of Burkheim with Oberrotweil, Oberbergen, Vogtsburg and Jechtingen. Burkheim Castle was built on the site of a ruined castle, which was destroyed by French troops in 1673. The last lord of Burkheim was Egid Joseph Karl von Fahnenberg.
