Brannenburg Castle is located in the municipality of Brannenburg at the northern edge of the Alps in the Unterinntal region in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim. The multi-part castle complex in English Neo-Gothic style today houses schools and a boarding school.
The town of Brannenburg is first mentioned in documents between 993 and 1000. The name Brannenburg is attributed to the fact that space for a settlement was created here through slash-and-burn cultivation. The town belonged as a closed community to the castle and later court district of Brannenburg. A noble family that called themselves von Brannenburg were ministerials of the Counts of Falkenstein and became extinct in the 14th century. The most famous resident of the castle was probably the military leader Kaspar II. Winzerer, who also received the rights of the court district for the castle. In 1554, the complex came into the possession of Hans Caspar von Pienzenau, who had it converted into a Renaissance castle. Major Max Reinhardt had the castle remodeled in the style of English Neo-Gothic between 1872 and 1875. In the 1960s, it became the state-recognized private secondary school and private technical college with boarding facilities for boys and girls, known as the Institute Castle Brannenburg.
