The approximately 750 square kilometers large natural park Barnim is the only common large protection area of the countries Brandenburg and Berlin. About 5.4 percent of the area is located in the northern districts of Berlin Pankow and Reinickendorf. Between Bernau, Bad Freienwalde, Eberswalde, Liebenwalde and Oranienburg lies the Brandenburger part of the nature park.
Especially the large-scale forests and forests characterize the landscape of the nature park. In addition, there are numerous lakes, moors, almost untouched river valleys and Ackersölle. These small, often moon-like waters are habitat for the heraldic animal of the nature park, the Rotauchauchunke.
In this varied landscape are places where remains of Slavic and German castles from the history of the Barnim, impressive field and brick buildings of ancient craftsmanship, historic waterways - such as the Finow Canal - testify to the economic ups and downs of the area.
