The National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald is a national park in the west of Germany in the low mountain range of the Hunsrück , in the countries Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland . The park is the sixteenth German National Park , one year after the founding of the Black Forest National Park and eleven years after the also in the Rhenish Slate Mountains or adjacent low mountain ranges and the main Buchenwald area national parks Eifel and Kellerwald . The official opening ceremony took place on Pentecost weekend 2015.
In 2014, the two state governments agreed to the name and adopted approval laws for the mutually agreed state treaty between the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland on the establishment and maintenance of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park (National Park Act) . As early as 2013, most of the municipalities in the area had approved the submitted concept.
The national park covers 10,120 ha in the area of the western altitudes of the Hunsrück, more specifically the Idarwald and the Black Forest high forest , which is usually referred to only as Hochwald. Of the total area, about 986 hectares of the Saarland National Park are within the municipalities of Nohfelden and Nonnweiler .
