Monastery Annenthal Coesfeld

The Sisters of Our Dear Lady were founded in 1850 by the two teachers from Coesfeld, Hilligonde Wolbring and
Elisabeth Kühling, during a time of great need in Coesfeld. Touched by the poverty of the children,
the two teachers took in seven girls into their house on Süringstraße. Chaplain Elting inspired them to establish a religious community to give their social engagement a long-term perspective. Before the famous Coesfeld Cross in St. Lamberti Church, the two women from Coesfeld made the
decision to live as religious women. By 1855, the community had become independent and grew rapidly. In the
motherhouse Annatal, at the present site of the hospital, the sisters were trained as teachers and taught in the order's own school. However, the Kulturkampf made it impossible for all religious people in Prussia to engage in teaching activities. Consequently, Annatal had to be sold in 1877. 200 sisters emigrated to North America, where they worked as teachers in small parish schools. This was the beginning of the international spread of the community.
