Little Stations of the Cross Chapel Coesfeld

The "Great and the Small Chapel" are part of the large Stations of the Cross in Coesfeld. Both were built in 1659 and are attributed to the master builder Bernhard Spoede based on recent findings.
The Great Stations of the Cross were established in 1659. It is a foundation of the Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen, who made Coesfeld his residence city in 1651.
For centuries, people have found strength and comfort in contemplating the Stations of the Cross. In the personal and communal following of the Stations of the Cross, humanity meets a God who is close to people.
Over the centuries, a longing developed to visit sites in the Holy Land (today Israel) that are associated with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Strengthened by this piety, Christians began replicating Stations of the Cross in their homeland from the 14th century onward. Stations of the Cross - sometimes with 7, sometimes with 14 or more stations, as in Coesfeld - expressed the Christian message from the Bible and tradition and visually promoted spiritual deepening.
At the center of the contemplation of the Great Stations of the Cross from the 17th century is the Coesfeld Cross. The path begins at the Lambertikirche and ends there after about 10 km. The great procession on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14) is one of the annual highlights on the Coesfeld Stations of the Cross.
