St. James (former Collegiate Church) Carthusian Church

Not far from the Bundesstrasse 51 between Dülmen and Buldern lies the former
Carthusian monastery »Marienburg«. The only settlement of the Carthusian Order in Westphalia was founded in 1476
founded. Until 1803 it was inhabited by the "silent monks". The foundation is based on the foundation of the knight Gerd von Keppel, who bequeathed his castle, including the associated possessions, to the order. In a
Prince-Bishop Heinrich Graf von Schwarzenburg confirmed the foundation. Saint Bruno of Cologne is venerated as the founder of the Carthusian order.

The first monks in Weddern used the existing rooms of the fortress as well as the castle chapel. This is 1312
documented and probably enjoyed the protection of the apostle James the Elder as patron saint even then
have. Due to the available funds and properties, the convent buildings grew rapidly to the maximum number of 22 characteristic, well-organized cell houses. With the construction of the monastery, the construction of the church also kept pace. After many additions and conversions, the late Gothic church is made of red
Brick is still used today as a simple, single-nave vaulted building.

In the tower hall of the church, based on copper engravings from 1739 and 1744, the former convent settlement "Marienburg zu Weddern", which was under the protection of the Trinity and the Mother of God, is depicted. Inside the church, among other things, a choir stall (probably from Cologne around 1350) and a
imposing Rococo grille from 1752.
