Observation tower NSG Wetland Saerbeck

The nature reserve (NSG) Wetland Saerbeck, located near Saerbeck, has been protected since 1983, covering an area of around 250 hectares. It is part of a large network of protected areas in North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically the EU Bird Protection Area "Wet Meadows in Northern Münsterland," and thus belongs to the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

By implementing species protection-oriented grassland management, such as the creation and maintenance of shallow waters (pools), rewetting, and particularly the extensive use of public lands, wet and moist meadows have been able to develop again. The Mühlengraben river flows through the wetland, lined with tall herbaceous plants and reed species. The entire large contiguous area is now in a very positive condition.

Due to the nutrient-poor and moist areas, rare species can be found in the NSG, such as Intermediate Sundew, Lungwort Gentian, Marsh Bloodwort, and Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid. Not only has the share of typical plants stabilized, but so has the breeding bird population. In addition to Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit, and Curlew, of which over 20 breeding pairs can be found here annually since 2007, one may also occasionally encounter the Blackcap or, with a bit of luck, the Golden Oriole.

The wetland Saerbeck is a significant stopover area for over 100 migratory bird species. This includes, for example, arctic geese, various duck species such as the Spoonbill, and shorebirds.

The "Curlew Route," which is integrated into the cycling network of the NaTourismus routes in Tecklenburger Land, also runs through this protected area. With a flyer, as well as an information board and an observation tower on site, visitors can get to know and experience it better.
