The Dinkel originates in North Rhine-Westphalia in the western Münsterland in the district of Coesfeld between Ahaus and Coesfeld in the municipality of Rosendahl. Its source is located in the district of Holtwick, 2 km south of the village center.
From a height of about 80 m, it flows from there first west-southwest towards Gescher – where it forms the municipal boundary of Rosendahl for about 3 km – as well as to the A 31 and then parallel to it northwards towards Legden and Heek. After passing under the federal motorway, it reaches Gronau a little further northwest. In the Gronau urban area, it has been straightened several times, primarily for the purposes of local textile businesses. After Gronau, the Dinkel crosses the German-Dutch border, flowing untamed through a charming landscape in the area of the municipalities of Losser and Denekamp, and re-enters German territory northeast of Ootmarsum, in the County of Bentheim in Lower Saxony. At the northern edge of Neuenhaus, it flows into the Vechte.
