House Kretier in Rhede in Westphalia is an old manor house, built in a castle-like style and surrounded by moats for better protection. The first documented mention occurred in the course of the 14th century. However, the estate may have existed for some time before that. Over the coming centuries, House Kretier had various owners. During the Thirty Years' War, a legend emerged that is known far beyond the borders of Rhede. In 1671, there was said to be the "Blood Rain of Kretier." It is said that it rained blood that froze into red ice due to the cold weather.
At the end of the 17th century, the house finally passed to the van Hövell family, who still own the estate today. House Kretier is still privately inhabited, so a visit is only possible from the outside. However, one can join the so-called Legend Safari, which is offered by the city and the local heritage association. A stop is also made at House Kretier, where the owners serve red grape juice in reference to the aforementioned Blood Rain.
