House Byink Davensberg

Source: KHR

Description

Between Davensberg and Ascheberg, following the Byinkstraße from Davensberg, lies the Byink house. The oldest known owners of the Byink house are referred to as the "Lords of Ascheberg." Beautifully situated and visibly appealing, the Byink house is embedded in the park landscape on the southern edge of Davensberg. It is structured as a former two-island water castle complex in close proximity to the knight's seat of Romberg.

The Byink house consists of the main building, which was built in 1558 by Heinrich von Ascheberg as a Westphalian farmhouse in Renaissance style. The gables are adorned with semicircular appendages, and the gable walls display figurative decorations with colorful glazed bricks: armed men, diamond patterns, and years.

Particularly interesting is the mighty gatehouse built in two stories: it features two semicircular tower-like projections. The entire building is made of brick mosaics, decorated with a few playing halberdiers. It was erected in 1561.

Southwest of the main building, the manor house stood on a special island. The well-preserved main building itself has walls up to 1.5 meters thick, a huge kitchen, and a barn that comfortably accommodates six fully loaded grain carts.

The oldest known owner of the Byink house is Heinrich von Ascheberg, around 1400, who is married to Hille von Hamern. Around 1550, Byink came back into the possession of a Heinrich von Ascheberg, who is also the builder of the still standing buildings. The canon Heidenreich von Ascheberg bequeathed Byink in 1698 to Christoph Engelbert von Beverförde-Werries. This line died out in 1780 with the "mad Werries." All estates, including the Byink house, were bequeathed by him to the son of his cousin, namely Friedrich Clemens von Elverfeld. However, the heir had to adopt the name and coat of arms of the testator.
