The Sonne Freienhufen power plant has been a substitute fuel power plant and waste incineration facility since January 2008, with a total output of 66 megawatts, located in the Freienhufen district of the city of Großräschen in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in the southern part of Brandenburg. It was originally established with the construction of the brown coal power plant Renate-Eva at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, along with the associated briquette factories. During the time of the GDR, briquette factories Sonne I and II were built on the site, from which the current power plant emerged.
After brown coal deposits were discovered in the region between Großräschen and Senftenberg, the coal mine "Renate" was opened in 1896 immediately southeast of the present power plant location. In the same year, a briquette factory of the same name was established on the present operational site. To house the workers, a settlement called "Grube Renate" was built south of the factory in the southeastern part of the area of the then municipality of Dobristroh, which has since been completely dismantled. In 1897, the briquette factory "Renate" began operations with eight briquette presses, processing the brown coal extracted from the coal mine into briquettes. Shortly thereafter, the opening of the "Eva" mine, located a kilometer and a half to the south, took place.
