Lock Liebenwalde

The Liebenwalde lock is located at kilometer 45.30 of the Upper Havel Waterway near Liebenwalde in the district of Oberhavel in Brandenburg. The section of the Upper Havel Waterway, branching off from the Havel-Oder Waterway to the north towards the Voßkanal at kilometer 40.50, is called the Malzer Kanal, with the official abbreviation MzK.

As part of the expansion of the second Finow Canal, the first lock was built around this spot in 1749. Its dimensions were adapted to the vessels of that time and it was constructed as a basin lock. The resulting weir stage also served to ensure a sufficient water supply for the Finow Canal. Since the lock could no longer cope with ship traffic, it was demolished in 1831 and replaced with a new construction in the form of a chamber lock. The lock was completed in connection with the expansion of the Malzer Canal in 1834 and was renewed in 1966, but was decommissioned in 1975. The gates at the upper head were replaced by a weir.
The third lock was built in 1974/1975 and is still in operation today. It was constructed using steel sheet piling and has a usable length of 49.80 meters and is 10.53 meters wide.
