Gartenfeld is a locality in the Berlin district of Siemensstadt in the Spandau district. Gartenfeld is located in the extreme northwestern area of Siemensstadt at the border with Tegel and is occasionally referred to as an island, as the area is completely surrounded by the Berlin-Spandau Shipping Canal and its branch, the Old Berlin-Spandau Shipping Canal. In 2018, the Berlin Senate designated the area as one of the city's most important new development areas, which is intended to accommodate around 8,000 people after the closure of Tegel Airport.
The island location emerged between 1906 and 1914 during the construction of the main shipping route Berlin–Stettin for larger ship dimensions, during which the canal was expanded and drawn directly to the Havel northeast of Gartenfeld. The old section of the canal from the years 1848/1859 remained and encloses Gartenfeld in the south and west. The old canal originally flowed into Lake Tegel at the Kleine Malche. The outlet section between the Havel section of the new or expanded part of the canal and the Kleine Malche was later drained.
