The Ruppin Lordship, also called the Ruppin Estate, the Ruppin Province or the County of Ruppin, was a territory belonging to the Holy Roman Empire from about 1214 to 1524, and the personal property of the Counts of Lindow-Ruppin. Initially, it is believed that he may have been independent, although he ended up being a vassal of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. After the extinction of the House of Lindow-Ruppin, it became a district of the Marquis of Brandenburg.
The Ruppin region had practically no settlements until the 1st century. Probably from the 6th century, some East Slavic tribes began to settle in the area. As early as 948, there are already references to the tirbu of Zamzizi that populated the area, possibly with its capital in what is now known as Ruppin's Slawenburg, a village on an island in the middle of Lake Ruppin. Another settlement on the north bank of the Bützsee is also known to have been a center of worship. On the western shore of Lake Ruppin was the Treskov Fortress which survived until the second half of the twelfth century.
