Mulde Bridge Bad Düben

Description

The Mulde Bridge Bad Düben is a bridge over the Vereinigte Mulde on the western outskirts of Bad Düben, first mentioned in 1226.

The first documented mention of a bridge over the Mulde was in 1226. It was located upstream of the current location. In 1631, Gustav II Adolf of Sweden and his Saxon allies crossed the bridge with 38,000 men. In 1670, the bridge was relocated in the direction of Düben Castle and served as an important river crossing of the old trade and military road. In the chaos of war before the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After Napoleon I had set up his headquarters at Düben Castle from 10 October 1813 to 14 October 1813, he moved with 150,000 soldiers to Leipzig to the famous Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. In 1876 and 1877, the wooden bridge was replaced by a steel two-half-arch construction. At the end of the Second World War, the bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht in April 1945 and a wooden temporary bridge was completed in the autumn of 1945. Wooden piles of the former wooden bridges still stand on the banks of the Mulde today. They are located about 12 metres downstream on the left bank of the Mulde and a large number of wooden piles about 45 metres upstream, also on the left bank of the Mulde.
