The double lock on the Wesel-Datteln Canal is the first station for ships coming from the Rhine to enter the onward canal system. This canal provides connections to the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Mittelland Canal and the Rhine-Herne Canal. Up to the junction in Datteln, 6 barrages have to be passed. On the 60 km long route, a difference in altitude of 43 meters is mastered. Depending on the water level of the Rhine, the stroke in the Emmelsum lock can be up to 8 metres. The large, almost 80-year-old reservoir is 220 metres long. The small pool is almost 45 years old and half as long. Both pools are 12 metres wide.
The lifting process in the large pool takes one hour. Every day, about 120 ships pass through the lock. A team of 12 employees ensures that shipping traffic can be maintained day and night. Locks are open continuously, but only from 6 a.m. on Mondays and Sundays. On public holidays, different lock times apply.
Near the lock, the Emmelsum harbour was inaugurated in 1972. The ships that dock here primarily bring freight for aluminum smelting, pulp and agricultural forest products are handled here.
