Lüchow Castle

Lüchow Castle was a castle complex in Lüchow in Lower Saxony, of which only the Amtsturm remains today as a former defensive tower. The castle was built at the end of the 14th century on the site of a Slavic ring wall and a later castle. In the devastating city fire of 1811, the remains of the already dilapidated castle were destroyed. Only the office tower, which is now a listed building, has been preserved.

The geographically favourable location of a sand island in a river bend of the Drawehner Jeetzel was already used for a defensive work centuries before the castle was built. At the site there was a Slavic ring wall with a diameter of 75 meters, which was proven during archaeological excavations in the mid-1980s. The wall had four different construction phases, in which it was destroyed by fire in two phases. Dendrochronological investigations of recovered timber revealed the years around 1040 for the first construction phase and the years around 1070 for the second construction phase. Furthermore, shards of late Slavic pottery were found and, in deeper soil layers, Menkendorf pottery, so that an even older Slavic defensive fortification can be assumed here.
