Cottendorf

Cottendorf is located in the Ilm Valley at the confluence of the seven-kilometer-long Humbach. The surrounding area of Cottendorf is flat and agricultural in the north, while it consists of hilly heathland in the south. The predominant type of rock is shell limestone. 400 meters east of Cottendorf, on the other side of the Ilm, is the town of Dörnfeld an der Ilm.

Cottendorf was first mentioned in a document on March 20, 1143.
Until 1920, the town was part of the Stadtilm office under the jurisdiction of the principality or Free State of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. From 1920 to 1952, it belonged to the Arnstadt district. The district was divided in 1952, and Cottendorf was then located in the reduced Arnstadt district. On March 6, 1969, the town was incorporated into the municipality of Dörnfeld an der Ilm. In 1994, the districts of Ilmenau and Arnstadt were reunified under the name Ilm-Kreis. Dörnfeld joined with other nearby towns to form the municipality of Singerberg on April 6, 1994, which merged into the municipality of Ilmtal on June 1, 1996. This was subsequently incorporated into Stadtilm on July 6, 2018.
