Fernbreitenbach is located five kilometers east of the administrative seat of Berka/Werra along the lower reaches of the Suhl. The total area of the district is 6.98 km². The state road 1023 from Herda to Marksuhl runs through the locality.
The first mention of the village of Fernbreitenbach occurred in the document book of the Frauensee Monastery on June 27, 1261. It belonged to the Hessian-Saxon office of Hausbreitenbach.
