Mardorf is a village and a former municipality in the Hanover region of Lower Saxony, Germany. Due to its location on the northern shore of the Steinhuder Meer and within the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, it is state-recognised as a resort with its tourism.
During the Elster glacial period around 400,000 years ago, many erratic boulders, such as the Davidstein, the Goliath Stone and the Paul Woldstedt Stone, were transported from Scandinavia to northern Germany and thus also to the Mardorf area. Around 15,000 years ago, the Steinhuder Meer formed with shifting and sand dunes in the northern area of the water, where Stone Age campsites were located around 10,000 years ago. Around 5,500 BC there were three settlements around today's Mardorf, which were located in the White Mountains to the west, on the Bannsee to the north and in Lütjen Mardrup to the east of the village. In the 5th to 8th centuries AD, the old "Lütjen Mardrup" was built with two to three so-called "free" farms.
