Semd is a district of Groß-Umstadt in the southern Hesse district of Darmstadt-Dieburg on the northern edge of the Odenwald.
The first documentary evidence dates back to around 1312. Initially referred to as Semede or Semme, later as Sem or Sembt. Semd was a communal possession of the Electoral Palatinate and the Landgraviate of Hesse. In 1576, both held the supreme authority and jurisdiction. In Semd, nobility and the church have land ownership; such as the Counts of Hanau, the Fulda Monastery, the von Frankenstein family, the von Wasen family, the Ulner family from Dieburg, the Gayling family from Altheim, the von Karben family, the von Rodenstein family, the von Groschlag family, the Schenken family from Erbach, the von Düdelsheim family, the von Bleichenbach family, and the Gans family from Otzberg.
