The residential building Schnoor 42 is located in Bremen, district Mitte in the Schnoor quarter, Schnoor 42. It was built around 1805. It houses the Institute for Low German Language.
The original population of Schnoor predominantly consisted of river fishermen and boatmen. During the periods of Classicism and Historicism, most of the often small buildings were created from around 1800 to 1890. Over time, it became a poor neighborhood that fell into disrepair in many areas – especially after World War II.
In 1959, the city adopted a local statute to protect the valuable building substance. The houses were documented, and many were placed under monument protection since the 1970s. Starting in the 1960s, renovations, infill developments, and conversions took place in Schnoor with the support of the city.
