With almost 4,300 inhabitants, Altenhundem is the largest town in the municipality of Lennestadt, in the Sauerland, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is also the capital of Lennestadt, as the government of this municipality is based in Altenhundem. The village is located at about 300 meters above sea level.
The village of Altenhundem is more or less centrally located in the municipality of Lennestadt, at the mouth of the Hundem stream in the Lenne. The Bundesstraße 236 runs through this valley and therefore also through Altenhundem from Schwerte to the winter sports resort of Winterberg. At Altenhundem, the Bundesstraße 517 branches off from the B 236. The B 517 runs south to Kirchhundem and Kreuztal.
