Blankenstein, formerly Blankenstein/Ruhr, is a former town in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis and today a district of Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia with 2,743 inhabitants. The place is located directly on the southern bank of the Ruhr River, opposite the city of Bochum.
The origins of the place date back to the foundation of Blankenstein Castle by Count Adolf I of the Mark in the year 1227. A settlement was established in front of the castle, which flourished in the following years. In 1355, Count Engelbert III of the Mark confirmed the freedoms of Blankenstein. By 1554, Blankenstein was even a member of the Hanseatic League. In 1594, the residents of Blankenstein received the right from Johann Wilhelm of Cleves to hold three annual markets. Around 1607, the Protestant community was formed. The first Pentecost fair took place in 1434.
