Rühler Moor peat power plant

The Rühler Moor peat power plant was located on the Ems south of Rühle in Lower Saxony. From 1926 to 1974, it was used to generate electricity from the burning of peat extracted from the surrounding area. It was one of the two former peat power plants in Germany.

From 1900 onwards, privately operated companies began to extract peat on the German side of the Bourtang Moor. Since, due to the increasing importance of hard coal, it was hardly possible to sell black peat as a fuel, it was only possible to make a sufficient profit by marketing white peat. From a soil engineering point of view, the legislation only provided for peat extraction permits for white peat if the utilisation of the black peat was also ensured. This was the only way to ensure that the soil could be used for subsequent agricultural purposes.
