The village is located at an altitude of 49 meters above sea level just across the Dutch-German border, near Oldenzaal. It also borders the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The village was first mentioned in 1292. At that time it was still called Nyenkerken. Until 1974 Gildehaus was an independent municipality. Since then, it has belonged to the municipality of Bad Bentheim. The parish of Gildehaus also includes the former independent towns of Achterberg, Bardel, Hagelshoek, Holt und Haar, Waldseite and Westenberg.
