The area was first mentioned in 966 as Mühlgau, where the gaucount Erenfried ruled at the time. In 1082 it came to the county of Kessel. There were two parishes: St. Anthony and St. George, which were respectively part of the cathedral chapter of Cologne and the chapter of Xanten. The churches were and are located on both sides of the Kranenbach. From 1305 to 1801 they belonged to the Bridges office of the Duchy of Gulik. In 1816 it came to Prussia. In 1970, the municipality of Amern and Waldniel were merged to form the municipality of Schwalmtal.
