Windmill Tower Vorhelm

Description

Since 1986, the Heimatverein Vorhelm has made its home in the monument-protected circular building of the Old Mill in Vorhelm. After renovating the old Krumtünger building with a lot of personal effort, there is now a local historical gem here that the association has since taken over as the owner.

The former windmill Krumtünger, built at the beginning of the 20th century, was one of the few mills in the Münsterland built in Dutch style. It burned down in 1906, was rebuilt in 1907, and the mill was no longer powered by wind but by a machine. It is certainly no longer known to the younger residents of Vorhelm that until 1935, large parts of the village and the immediate neighborhood were supplied with direct current, generated by a large gas engine of "VEG Vorhelm" in the mill. The heated cooling water was used by environmentally and energy-conscious owners and neighbors for bathing purposes. According to oral tradition, the then mill owner Christoph Krumtünger announced the start of a new year to the residents of Vorhelm by repeatedly turning the power on and off after midnight on New Year's Eve.

The mill was in operation as such until the end of the 1960s but then fell into disrepair until it was renovated by the Heimatverein Vorhelm in 1986. The Heimatverein then took care of the maintenance and gradual restoration of the historic building as a tenant. In 2012, the Heimatverein purchased the mill from its owner Egon Mense.

Today, the mill is not only home to the headquarters of the Heimatverein but also a wedding room of the city of Ahlen as well as the association's local archive. On the second floor, numerous pictures and drawings by the Vorhelm artist Johannes Everding are stored, who sketched many buildings and landscapes in and around Vorhelm until his death in 1990.

A special highlight for those wishing to marry is always the ceremony in the authentically styled Westphalian wedding room on the first floor. Here, up to 50 people can be accommodated, and the wedding in the festively decorated historical ambiance makes the day an unforgettable experience.
