The museum building in the midst of the historic old town of Ahlen is located on the site of the former Oers farm, one of the medieval noble courtyards of Ahlen. In the mid-19th century, the economic part of the timber-framed house was enlarged, and the building was also used agriculturally in its form as a four-post hall house with a deele, flett, and upkammer. After extensive renovation work in the 1970s, the local museum was opened to the public in 1981 and has been under the supervision of the cultural office of the city of Ahlen since the mid-1980s.
Covering an area of 450 square meters, the local museum provides an appealing insight into the development of the city of Ahlen. It showcases the first Stone Age artifacts from the Ahlen area, an illustration of the famous "Ahlener Mammoth," early settlement traces, medieval urban structures, and the development of the city of Ahlen from a quaint Westphalian agricultural town to a large industrial city in the green.
The newly established museum educational room offers school classes the opportunity to understand city history intensively and vividly at this out-of-school learning location. In the special exhibition room "Old Deele," interesting and illustrative exhibitions on the history of the city of Ahlen are presented repeatedly.
