The battles at the Westwall near Simmerath
On September 14, 1944, parts of the US Infantry Regiment 39 launched an attack from Roetgen and occupied Lammersdorf, located in front of the Westwall. Simmerath was reached on September 29 but was then recaptured by the 272nd Volksgrenadier Division. The area west and south of Simmerath remained contested between both fronts for months. By mid-December 1944, parts of the 78th US Infantry Division finally took Simmerath. However, the Westwall section in the area of today’s circular path to Imgenbroich was not definitively occupied by American forces until the end of January.
