The Kalltalsperre is a drinking water dam located near Simmerath-Rollesbroich close to Monschau, in the district of Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The construction of the Kalltalsperre, which dams the Kall river, began on March 21, 1934, as part of a government program for job creation. In the same year, the construction of the Heimbach dam and the Schwammenauel reservoir also commenced. - The dam was first filled on January 8, 1936, and inaugurated on August 23, 1936. Since 1926, there has been a connection tunnel for raw water supply. The 3.7 km long Heinrich-Geis tunnel leads from the upper lake of the Rurtalsperre to the Kalltalsperre. From there, the 6.2 km long Kall tunnel leads to the Dreilägerbachtalsperre. Hiking and cycling are available as recreational activities. Swimming or water sports are not permitted as it is a drinking water reservoir. There is a nice circular path around the dam, which is easily reachable on foot from the Kallbrück hiking parking lot. The technical facilities can be visited upon request. Text partly taken from www.eifelreisen.de
