The origins of Burg Landshut go back to the 4th century Roman fort built at this strategic location to guard the Moselle route. In the 13th century, a medieval castle was built at the same location by the Archbishops of Trier.
The name "Landshut" first appeared in 1505. In 1692 , the castle was largely destroyed by fire, with only parts of the tower and the enclosure wall remaining. This ruin has since been a popular viewpoint and historical monument.
According to local legend, a “white lady” wanders around the ruins at night: the ghost of a noblewoman who was accused of being unfaithful and jumped from the tower in grief.
Burg Landshut is an imposing castle ruin that towers high above Bernkastel-Kues and is one of the most characteristic sights on the Moselle. With its rich history and breathtaking views, it is a popular destination for history buffs and hikers alike.
The ruin is located at an altitude of 235 metres and offers a panoramic view of the Moselle valley, the vineyards and the town of Bernkastel-Kues. Visitors can climb the tower and enjoy the impressive landscape. After recent restorations, there is a barrier-free tour with information boards about the history of the castle, including references to the original Roman fort.
From the castle you can see not only Bernkastel-Kues, but also surrounding villages such as Graach, Wehlen, Zeltingen-Rachtig and Andel . The slopes around the castle are covered with vineyards. One of the most famous wines from this region is the Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling , with vineyards that reach almost to the castle.
