Description by the author

Around 170 years ago, brown coal was discovered in the Rauen Hills, where it was mined until 1950. The hike to the 153 metre elevation starts at Bad Saarow harbour and runs along the signposted trail to the “Markgrafensteine”, which at 180 cubic metres are North Germany’s largest boulders.Length: 13 kilometres (3 hours)Start / finish: Bad SaarowLogo/route sign: not specifiedHow to get there:Public transport: Take the S7 (Wartenberg) from Berlin central station to Ostkreuz. From here, continue with the S3 to Erkner and then with the RE1 (Frankfurt/Oder) to Fürstenwalde/Spree. From here take the RB35 to Bad Saarow (about 1.5 hours).Car: From Berlin along the A113, A10, A12 and the L35 to Bad Saarow (around 1.5 hours)Route: Bad Saarow, Petersdorf, Bad SaarowRoute description: Its bigger “brother” is no longer fully preserved. If you’d like to see the other part, you will need to travel to the Lustgarten in front of the Altes Museum in Berlin. This is where you will find the granite bowl made from the 300 square metre giant. In the Rauen Hills, you can visit the observation tower, also accessible by Segway, from where, if the weather is clear, you can look across at Lake Scharmützelsee and Fürstenwalde for just Euro 1 (please have the right money in Euro or 50 cent coins). If visibility is clear, you can even make out the Television Tower in Berlin and the Tropical Islands water park. Along with brown coal, the underworld here also concealed military secrets, which can be seen today on a guided tour of the Fuchsbau bunker system. The complex was used by the Nazi Armed Forces, the GDR’s NVA and the Federal Armed Forces. Sports fans will find a real paradise in Petersdorf at the year-round toboggan run. Who needs snow for a toboggan ride? You can do it here at any time of year. You can also go skiing at the Seeschloss Petersdorf leisure centre. However, it’s water skiing using the 740-metre-long water ski cable car.Sights:Bad Saarow: Saarow village church, SaarowCentrum, Bad Saarow spa gardens, historic stationFuchsbau Bunker MuseumRauen Hills observation towerPossible combinations:66-Lakes TrailStunning houses in Bad SaarowUnderfoot conditions/surface: Not specifiedMaps/Literature:"Radwander- und Wanderkarte Scharmützelsee, Bad Saarow und Umgebung: Radeln und Wandern zwischen Beeskow, Fürstenwalde und Storkow", 1:35,000, Verlag: Barthel, A., Auflage: 3 (1.
