Schmeling circular hike

The first German World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Max Schmeling (1905-2005) lived in Bad Saarow from 1930 to 1938, in the ‘Haus Sonnenhof’ on the street called ‘Am Dudel’. As a hunter, he loved to go walking – and we can follow one of his routes.

From the harbour, the route runs along the lakeside promenade towards the Kurpark. At Markgrafensteg jetty, turn off the lakeside promenade into Kirchstrasse to Saarow Church. Max Schmeling married his beloved Anny Ondra in this church in 1933. From here, follow Ulmenstrasse and Moorstrasse, past the Scharwenka House, towards Wierichwiesen meadow.
The path then meanders along the Wierichwiesen, where the eco-farms from Marienhöhe take their grass and hay for natural cattle farming and where therapeutic moor is cut. You will be able to see a very special plant in the Wierichwiesen. The broad-leaved marsh orchid, a species of orchid that blossoms in May and June, is a protected species because of its rarity.
After the expanses of the meadow, the path finally runs through the forest. It’s worth taking a basket with you in the mushroom season.
There are many historical buildings along the way, such as the Ondra House, the Schmeling House and the Thorak House. The green information panels along the route provide full information about the history of Bad Saarow.
