The landmark and historic symbol of the town of Fürstenwalde can be seen from far away: The 68 metre high Cathedral of St. Mary in the heart of the town centre, surrounded by the Bürgerpark gardens and the local history museum. As one of the two official cathedral cities in Brandenburg, Fürstenwalde, the largest town in the Oder-Spree administrative district, can look back over more then 750 years of history.Length: 3 kilometres (1 hour)Start / finish: Parking on GoetheplatzLogo/route sign: Not specifiedHow to get there:Public transport: From Berlin central station, take the RE1 (Cottbus) to Fürstenwalde (about 50 minutes).Car: From Berlin, take the A100, A113, A10 and the L38 to Fürstenwalde (about 1 hour).Route: Parking on Goetheplatz, Altstädter Kiez, Spreepromenade, Niederlagetor, Goetheplatz parkingRoute description: During its 750-year history, Fürstenwalde was the bishops’ seat of the Diocese of Lebus for more than 200 years. The Cathedral was almost completely destroyed in 1945. The most precious artefact in the interior of the reconstructed building is the 12 metre high tabernacle created by the Freiburg sculptor Franz Maidburg in 1517. Visitors interested in history should visit the local history museum to see the most important coin discovery in the region, comprising 317 silver coins from the time of the Thirty Year War. In addition, exhibitions provide information about the prehistory and early history of the region, history of the town and its later industrial development. A highlight in the truest sense of the word is the lighthouse brought back from the Baltic Sea, which was originally built in the town in 1909. The museum’s basement also conceals some real treasures. It contains a display catalogue of Europe’s largest rock collection. Anyone who wants to see more will find more exhibits in the rock garden of the Bürgerpark gardens. The remains of the former bishops’ seat and the old town wall with the Bullenturm tower complete the cathedral site. Did you know that Fürstenwalde is the home of the art of traditional brewing? In the cellars of the Altes Rathaus, beer lovers can sample the quality of the barley brew.Sights:Brewery MuseumFürstenwalde MuseumCathedral of St. MaryPossible combinations:66-Lakes Hiking TrailTiere, Töpfern und TalenteUnderfoot conditions/surface: Not specifiedMaps/Literature:"66-Seen-Weg, Hikeline Wanderführer", 1:50,000, Verlag: Esterbauer, Auflage: 2 (2012), ISBN-13: 978-3850005012, Euro 14.90"Wander- und Radwanderkarte 66-Seen-Weg: Zu den Naturschönheiten rund um Berlin", 1:50.000, Verlag: Barthel, A., Auflage: 2 (1.
