Description by the author

This tour takes you past well-known excursion destinations such as the pile dwellings, the Birnau pilgrimage church or Salem Castle and lets you get to know and enjoy a varied natural landscape.

From Hagnau, the starting point of this cycle tour, you first follow the Lake Constance cycle path westwards to Meersburg. Here you will already come across the first sights that are worth getting off the bike for: Meersburg Castle, surrounded by a unique old town, the museum within the walls of Meersburg New Castle or the Vineum. Continuing along the Lake Constance cycle path, directly along the shores of Lake Constance, you reach Unteruhldingen, where the historic pile dwellings are well worth a visit. Here you leave the Lake Constance cycle path and cycle a few meters further inland to the basilica of the Cistercian monastery of Birnau. Make a short stop to enjoy the wonderful view from the square in front of the church and take a look inside the well-known baroque pilgrimage church. From here, the tour takes you through a charming landscape inland. On the "Prälatenweg", originally a farm track that connected the Salem monastery with the associated Birnau pilgrimage chapel as early as the 13th century, you will reach the castle lake in Salem some distance past the Affenberg and several lakes. If you like, you can take a short detour to Salem Monastery and Castle and visit the church there, which is well worth seeing, as well as the entire castle complex. From Salem, you make your way back to Hagnau. This takes you via the Salem suburb of Mimmenhausen and Grasbeuren to the 300-year-old pilgrimage church of Baitenhausen, from where a wonderful view over the Salem valley rewards you for the climb. The last few kilometers to Hagnau lead through orchards and vineyards past Stetten and along the Höhenweg trail back to the town center, where many restaurants invite you to end the tour with a nice meal of Lake Constance fish and good Hagnau wine.
