From Altenbrak to Rübeland

Description

This hiking tour takes you from Altenbrak out of the Bodetal valley to the cave town of Rübeland. You cross the dam in Wendefurth and pass through the former mining town of Neuwerk before reaching Rübeland with its stalactite caves.

Directions

From the central hiking signpost on the large parking lot in Altenbrak, follow the signs upstream towards Wendfurth / Rübeland (green witch). Along the way, you pass historical old mining structures, go under a historic water bridge, and at the end of Altenbrak, you reach a trout breeding facility with a restaurant.

From here, follow the Bode River until Wendefurth, where you cross the B 81 federal road to reach the Wendfurther reservoir. Crossing the dam, the path continues on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail uphill to Kuhberg with a shelter. The now slightly descending hiking path runs along the outskirts of the Wendfurther reservoir and then upstream along the Schieferberg and abandoned quarries.

In Neuwerk, cross the Bode River and walk first on the village street and then on the parallel hiking trail until you reach the Kreuztal district. Continue on the Philosophenweg path to Rübeland, where you first pass Hermanns Cave and then cross the railway crossing to reach the center of the village and Baumanns Cave.
