Short description

Insight into around 400 million years of Earths evolutionary history on a 4.5 kilometer long hiking trail around the Michaelstein Monastery.

Description

Geological outcrops and explanatory display boards provide an insight into 400 million years of Earths history as well as the former mining activities of the region. The terrain along this route is very diverse. Wild rugged stream beds, some of which resemble small gorges, alternate with romantic pond landscapes and idyllic forest paths. In spring, the scent of fresh wild garlic accompanies you through the Teufelsbachtal valley. Many hikers become collectors of these healthy herbs. Hike through geological history and return refreshed to Blankenburg (Harz).

Directions

The starting point of the circular route is the parking lot at the Michaelstein Monastery. The path is marked with an illustration of an ammonite and crystal. After a few meters, it crosses the stream of the Klostergrundbach. You can reach there by walking shortly after the signpost on the right side between the houses. Once you have passed the stairs, follow the gentle meadow path towards the edge of the forest. A very idyllic root path winds through the trees here. Further along, a small gorge opens up to the right of the path. Following the terrain, the path reaches the valley floor of the Teufelsbachtal along the display boards. After the two bridges, turn right onto the forest road and cross the road between Heimburg and Oesig after about 700 m. With the sound of the Teufelsbach in your ears, continue below the sandstone rock Hans Mönch until you reach the confluence of the Teufelsbach and Goldbach. Crossing the bridge to the right, you pass by a small waterfall. At the Mönchemühlenteich you will find a rustic rest stop. The Geological Trail continues along the ponds to the road, where you keep right. After about 50 m, a wooden bridge leads left towards the Teufelsbad Fachklinik. Straight ahead at the Teufelsbrunnen, cross the entire length of the parking lot. Past the large ammonite and along the stream, you will return to the Michaelstein Monastery. Behind the administrative building to the left and following the road through the monastery grounds, you will reach the gatehouse, through which the path leads back to the parking lot and starting point.
