Description

What to expect:

  1. Shepherds farm
Old manor from the Thuringian period (5th century). Later used as a shepherds farm. Stones from the Altenburg were likely used for construction. Extensively restored after 1990.
  2. Schützenplatz
On the scattered orchard meadow stands the shooting house. The Langensteiner shooting club was founded in 1817. Originally, shots were fired from the window of the shooting house onto the concrete base.
  3. Forest hall
Here stood the house of the forest ranger. In the summer months, hikers could stop here. It was an additional source of income for the forest ranger. The property had its own well.
  4. Memorial Langenstein Zwieberge
In 1944, the Nazi regime planned to relocate armament production under the Thikenberge. Prisoners from the Buchenwald concentration camp were brought here for this purpose. The construction of the underground facility was never completed. Approximately 6000 people died due to inhumane conditions. The memorial was erected in their memory.
  5. Death pine
The pine tree served as a place of execution for the SS henchmen. Among others, a Soviet officer was executed here for refusing to hang other prisoners.
  6. Tönningstein
Here, there was a dispute between two shepherds. Each claimed the other had crossed the boundary. After one shepherd lost his life, the other had to erect this stone as atonement.
  7. Diptam meadow
The Dictam is a heat-loving plant that reaches its northern distribution limit in our region. The large Diptam meadow is unique. Nowhere else does the plant appear in such large numbers. The Dictam emits essential oils. On very hot days, it is said to be able to ignite. That is why the Dictam is also called the Burning Bush.
  8. Stone table
The Hoppelberg and the associated hunting grounds belonged to the Langensteiner estate owner. The stone table served as a meeting point and resting place for hunting parties. The prominent hunting tenant was the poet prince Gleim.
  9. Cherry orchard
The large orchard was later partially planted with pines. The Siemens stone is located on the northwest side.
