Dessau - Köthen – Bernburg – Zerbst – Coswig – Wörlitz – Dessau

 

Route description

Day 1:

Individual arrival in Dessau

Day 2: Dessau – Köthen (approx. 30 km)

Starting in the Bauhaus city of Dessau is the Museum of Urban History, which houses an exhibition about famous personalities from Dessau and the history of Anhalt. Passing through Reppichau, the birthplace of the author of the Sachsenspiegel, Eike von Repgow, you reach the Bach city of Köthen on the Europe Cycle Route R1.

Day 3: Köthen – Bernburg (approx. 25 km)

In Köthen, we recommend a visit to the Bach memorials in the castle. Johann Sebastian Bach served here for six years as the court chapel master. You continue on the Europe Cycle Route R1 to the beautiful Saale-side city of Bernburg.

Day 4: Bernburg – Zerbst (approx. 45 km)

A visit to the Renaissance castle in Bernburg, beautifully located above the Saale, is highly recommended. Via the Saale Cycle Route, you reach the confluence of the Saale and Elbe rivers. Crossing the Saale and Elbe twice by ferry, the destination of this stage is Zerbst.

Day 5: Zerbst – Coswig – Wörlitz (approx. 40 km)

Along the Vorflämings and the Elbe, your first stage destination is the small Elbe town of Coswig. A ferry takes you to the other side of the Elbe. There, a restaurant invites you to rest with a wonderful view of the Elbe and Coswig. You then continue to Wörlitz, where a walk through the park grounds belonging to the World Heritage site is a charming must-do.

Day 6: Wörlitz – Dessau (approx. 20 km)

On one of Saxony-Anhalts most attractive cycle routes, the Garden Realm Tour Prince Franz, you reach the Bauhaus city of Dessau. Along the way, there are two short detours to the Baroque city of Oranienbaum and to Schloss Luisium in Dessau-Waldersee.

Dessau is located on the A 9 and can be reached in about one hour by car or one and a half hours by train from Berlin.
