The Unstrut cycle path follows the Unstrut river through northern Thuringia and southern Saxony-Anhalt until it flows into the Saale.

Description

The Unstrut cycle path accompanies the river on its way through northern Thuringia and southern Saxony-Anhalt, spanning almost 200 km. In Thuringia, in addition to some interesting city tours, such as the half-timbered town of Mühlhausen or the spa and rose town of Bad Langensalza, there are also some very interesting detours.

Route Description

In Saxony-Anhalt, the cycle path crosses the Romanesque Road three times, passes at the foot of the Mittelberg, the site of the Nebra Sky Disc, and meets the Saale-Unstrut Wine Route, including the town of Freyburg, home of the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine, where a guided tour should not be missed. The Unstrut cycle path ends near the cathedral city of Naumburg, where it connects to the Saale cycle path.

Further Information

The Unstrut river rises west of Kefferhausen in the Eichsfeld region, crosses a part of the Thuringian Basin, and enters a wide, fertile valley between the Hohen Schrecke and Ziegelroda Plateau mountain ranges. At Memleben, this valley narrows, followed by the most varied part of the river course. Sometimes a bit romantic, sometimes slow and sluggish, then again confined in a corset of shell limestone or sandstone mountains, the Unstrut opens up the well-known wine-growing region through which the 13th German Wine Route leads. After a length of about 190 km, the Unstrut flows into the Saale between Kleinjena and Naumburg. The Unstrut is the main tributary of the Thuringian Basin and its surroundings, and the most water-rich tributary of the Saale.
