Description

The Devils Path is the toughest ascent to the Brocken. The hike starts in Elendstal and goes uphill along the Bode river on a well-developed forest path to Schierke. Here, a detour to the Schnarcherklippen is worthwhile. Going downhill, passing the Mäuseklippe again to Schierke, then to the Exzellenzenweg along the cold Bode, over the next bridge to the right through the Schluftwiesen. After crossing the road, the ascent through the Eckerloch to the Brocken begins. The path leads over the Black Schluftwasser, across the tracks of the Brockenbahn to the Eckerloch hut. The Eckerlochstieg ends at the Brockenstraße. The Devils Path continues on the circular path passing by the Brockengarten, Devils Pulpit, and Witches Altar. The descent to Bad Harzburg is on the Heinrich-Heine-Weg, a former column road on the so-called Schutzstreifen (now the route of the Harzer Grenzweg on the Green Belt). After 3.5 km, the ranger station at Scharfenstein is reached, then it continues on forest paths to the Eckertalsperre. Further into the Eckertal and up the Braunschweiger Weg to Molkenhaus. From there, over the Ettersklippe to the destination of the hike - Bad Harzburg.

Parking Information

Elend: Parking in the village center and train station (fee required), Waldbad

Bad Harzburg: Parking available at the bottom station of the Burgberg cable car (fee required) and at the large parking lot on B4 at Hotel Seela (fee required)
