Short description

Take a round trip through picturesque small Altmark villages to Zethlingen in the Langobard workshop and discover prehistoric life.

Description

The route takes you through beautiful tree-lined avenues, meadows, and forests. Here and there, historical sites and fieldstone churches in almost every village entice you, allowing you to wonderfully observe the flora and fauna.

Directions

Our journey begins at the bicycle rental station at the castle, between MEDIAN Clinic and nursing home.

You drive up to the intersection of the two ice cream cafes and turn left into Stendaler Straße. At the intersection, turn right into Ernst-Thälmann-Straße, which you follow straight ahead, past the two gas stations. You have now arrived on the road-side cycle path to Wernstedt and stay on it until just past the Wernstedt town entrance sign. Around house number 4, turn right onto a dirt road and always keep left. This is the old railway embankment to Faulenhorst. You come out at the playground and now turn right onto the road towards Winkelstedt.

After about 3 km, you reach the circular village, a round through the village center is worth it. Continue on the road to Wustrewe. Stop briefly here at Station 2 at the town exit towards Zethlingen at the only original preserved milestone and learn about the history. Now follow the road to Zethlingen and cross the village past the church to the very end of the village. If you keep left and follow the signs, you will drive directly to Mühlenberg, where the Langobard workshop is located. Take a break now and immerse yourself in a completely different time. A visit is worthwhile.

Continue back towards Wustrewe, but turn about 200m left behind the Zethlingen town exit sign onto an agricultural path. Follow this until you reach the concrete track. Here, continue towards Bühne. You are now driving through an area that was still a swamp in the 17th century. During the 30 Years War, mercenaries disappeared without a trace here several times. Once in the village, keep right and make a short stop at the church.

Do you notice anything special about the church? Take a look at the arrangement of the stones! First large, then small, and finally large again. There is a legend that the men started the construction but were too exhausted after some time. The women stepped in and searched the field for smaller stones. The men did not want to leave the triumph to the ladies and completed the construction with large stones. For the last 5 km, follow the road back to Kalbe (Milde).
