One of the most important long-distance cycle routes in Europe is the European Cycle Route R1. It rightfully bears its name, as no long-distance cycle route offers more of this continent. From Boulogne-sur-Mer on the French Channel coast to St. Petersburg in Russia, the R1 connects people, nature, and culture of nine European countries over more than 3,500 kilometers: France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Russia.
Follow the German section of the European cycle route R1 over a total of 940 kilometers. The route here is identical to the D-Route 3. From the Dutch border near Vreden, the R1 leads through Münsterland, the Teutoburg Forest, along the Harz, through the Elbe floodplains, through Dessau-Roßlau, and Wittenberg with UNESCO World Heritage sites, and further to Potsdam and Berlin.
Around 260 kilometers of the R1 pass through Saxony-Anhalt. Starting in the Harz region, at the foot of the legendary Brocken, you will travel on partly challenging routes to the National Park town of Ilsenburg and further to Kloster Drübeck. From there, the R1 leads to the Colorful Town of Wernigerode, to Kloster Michaelstein, and to Blankenburg with its castle and castle gardens. Passing the mysterious rock castle of Regenstein, you will discover the unique Bode Gorge in Thale. The Romanesque collegiate church in Gernrode or the idyllic parks of the town of Ballenstedt invite you to take a break, as well as the Konradsburg in Ermsleben. Here you leave the Harz region behind and cycle through the northern Harz foothills to the Harzer Seeland, to Staßfurt, and to the Saale town of Bernburg. After Köthen (Anhalt), the R1 reaches the Bauhaus town of Dessau-Roßlau via the Eike-von-Repgow village of Reppichau. Cycling through the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, you will also find yourself in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. After the baroque city, palace, and park ensemble of Oranienbaum, you will pass the gigantic City of Iron Ferropolis and the Bergwitzsee. Then you will reach the venerable Luther sites in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and cross the picturesque Fläming region towards Potsdam and Berlin.
According to the prevailing wind direction from the northwest, we recommend following our route description from west to east. The route is completely signposted and well developed and passable along the way. If you still have reason to criticize, please do not hesitate to inform us.
On six daily stages from the National Park town of Ilsenburg to Lutherstadt Wittenberg and into Fläming, numerous experiences and discoveries await you:
