Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg was born in 1797 in Wolfshagen im Harz. As a master carpenter, he came to Seesen in 1825 to work there.
Here Heinrich Engelhard initially repaired square pianos on the side until he established himself as an instrument maker in 1836. He specialized in building pianos and emigrated to New York with his family in 1850. There, they founded the internationally known company Steinway & Sons. The Steinweg family, later Steinway, always maintained contact with their Harz homeland and frequently visited. Numerous traces of the family can still be found in Wolfshagen im Harz and Seesen. Follow the trail and learn more about the history of the Steinways.
Start at the Festhalle Wolfshagen. From there, follow Jahnskamp towards the edge of the forest, passing the playground to Burgweg (nature trail). You will encounter the Harzer Höhenvieh on the meadows along the way. After the pavilion Steile Wiese, continue on Wittenbergsweg to Mandolinenhütte. From there, a steep path (400m) leads down to the Innerste Reservoir (alternative route via Ochsental). Upon reaching the cycle path, turn left towards Lautenthal. At the bus stop Trogtal, cross L515 and return to the flood area of the reservoir. Behind the parking lot, the Steinway Trail turns left into the forest. Now begins the ascent into Kleine Trogtal. At Stiefel, turn right, pass through Schnapsweg and Schnapsplatz to reach Tränkebachhütte (stamp point 104 of the Harzer Wandernadel). Down the valley, the remains of medieval mining line the trail. Keep left and cross the road after the bridge. The path to Seesen runs along the course of the Schildau. Crossing the Forellenstiegbrücke, you will return to Lautenthaler Straße / entrance to the town and the Steinway Park. A permanent exhibition at the Städtischen Museum Seesen is dedicated to the history of the Steinways. In order to preserve the memory of Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, the Wolfshäger Steinway e.V. was founded in 2010.
